Tuesday's Tip

How do you clean your kitchen sponge? Okay, so maybe you just throw it out when you think it is dirty upon repair. But there is a way to clean your sponge and kill the bacteria that may be living in it.

Sorry, Mom, dishwashing is not the best answer....microwaving it is! Thoroughly wet the sponge and put it in the microwave for two minutes on high power. Of course, be careful when removing the sponge from the microwave because it will be very HOT!

Yeah, we always threw ours in the dishwasher. I've never tried microwaving it. Does the scouring pad side spark though because of the metal in it?

Lisa, that is a good question about the scouring pad side. I would avoid sticking a sponge with a scouring pad on it in the microwave just b/c you don't want to have a science experiment turn into a trip to the store to buy a new microwave!

Well scotch brite sponges, choreboy, and those types of sponges the scouring pad doesn't hae metal in it its just some scrubby type stuff. I just pop in the microwave every 2 days or so for a minute on each side then throw it out after like a month or something. It works great :)
