Did the Bachelor Jump the Shark?

As we were watching the 2-hour 20/20 Special about The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, my husband blurts out, "The Bachelor has totally jumped the shark!" (In case you don't know, the term "jumping the shark" is a term that was coined when The Fonz on Happy Days literally went water skiing and jumped over a shark. it signifies a shows decline in ratings and slow or fast death.)

But I am not sure if he is right. While I do agree seeing the behind the scenes stuff did take away from some of the mystique of the show, I think it just fed viewer curiosity.

In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights I picked up on:

  • Bob Guiney slept with 5-1/2 women while on the show (I didn't understand what the half meant; luckily my hubby could explain the "guy" speak)
  • The average number of contestants the Bachelor/Bachelorette sleeps with is 3 (I guess that makes sense with 3 fantasy suites)
  • Deanna wishes that she would have chosen no one at the end just like Brad did (the guy who dumped her)
  • They cast half of the contestants on the hope they have a real connection with the Bachelor/Bachelorette, the other half for specific roles (i.e. drama queen, shy girl, alpha male)
  • Melissa Rycroft said she wasn't attracted to Jason Mesnick, but the hoopla of the show built up the excitement and attraction of him; oh, and after they got home from filming the show, she really didn't know much about him and didn't really want to pick up the phone and get to know him
  • The show paid $20k to fix the teeth of British Bachelor Matt prior to his show's filming
  • They knew Wes, the country singer, had ulterior motives for being on the show when they cast him
  • Jake was not their first choice for this last season of the Bachelor, Reid was
  • Reid is now dating Miss USA
  • Chris Harrison actually can't stand saying, "Ladies, this is the final rose of the evening."
  • The producer that Rozlyn had an "inappropriate" relationship with claimed he was in love with her, which prompted his dismissal and her removal from the show...even though she still denies any relationship
  • Trista and Ryan Sutter's 2-year old son is already up on skis - probably the cutest moment of the special

But tonight we have to say bye bye to The Bachelor for a while. Ali's season won't air until May!

Good post!!!
I was so glad to hear Melissa say what she did. the only part she didn't know about was Molly still being in the picture and wished she were warned. She is the definite winner I think...isn't Melissa precious? Can't wait to watch her on DWTS!

Kim,
According to my husband, the 1/2 refers to something of the oral nature. These girls sure do keep it classy, don't they? And with Bob, no less!
